Milagros Mexican Folk Art has been owned and nurtured by Heather Stockdale and her husband, Tom Perilstein, since 1991. This is their story.
Right: Tom and Heather with their son, Austin.
Road trips throughout Mexico in the early 1980s instilled in us a love of Mexican art and culture. Our initial plan had been to open an international folk art gallery, But after years of travel around Mexico, we realized that the art of this beautiful country had captured our hearts.
We began to develop relationships with the artisans we met, and we drove back to Mexico from Seattle every few months. In the beginning, we faced many challenges yet our trips were certainly fun and memorable. We learned Spanish while working with the artisans, building trust and friendships along the way.
Opening the Store
We first opened our shop in the heart of historic Pike Place Market in early 1991, and continued to travel to Mexico regularly.
In the mid 1990s, our son, Austin, was born, and we brought him on every trip to Mexico. As we worked with the artisans, our son would play with their children. He enjoyed his first sleepover in the city of Oaxaca at the age of three. Bringing our son along tightened bonds with the artisans, adding a wonderful new dimension to our trips.
We are approaching 30 years in business, and still find it exciting and emotionally rewarding on a daily basis.
Today, our mission remains the same from when we first opened Milagros—to support the wonderful artisans of Mexico and share their work, showcase the varied regional styles, and maintain affordable pricing.
Our practices haven’t changed either. We continue to visit Mexico every few months (no longer driving from Seattle), forever in search of art new or old to add to our collections. The love we have for Mexican folk art, culture, and people grows each trip.
We’re always thrilled to tell stories about our travels, and the many adventures we’ve had over the years in Mexico.
