Wonderful, whimsical wooden sculpture by renowned carver Gabino Reyes of Oaxaca. A Virgin of Guadalupe has been carved into the belly of the donkey.
Oaxacan woodcarving is a relatively new art form, originating in the early 1980's by the late Manuel Jimenez. He was the creator of these whimsical figures, carving them while tending to animals in the fields. They are hand carved from copal wood, initially with a machete and then with other rudimentary tools. The figures are then painted in intricate designs, often by the women. The result is a one of a kind piece of folk art , to be enjoyed for many years .
